YEAST
A new sound work ferments the distillery’s raw history into a vibrant, sensory experience of striking immediacy.
Composer and cellist Josefine Opsahl is creating YEAST: an ambitious and comprehensive new sound work made specifically for the kunsthal’s distinctive spaces, acoustics and history. The project is being developed in close collaboration with Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, Nordjyske Museer and the Aalborg City Archives.
Rooted in the site’s architecture, human narratives and sonic character, YEAST unfolds in three connected parts:
- A symphonic work rooted in the site’s history, premiered by Aalborg Symphony Orchestra
- A permanent sound installation for the kunsthal’s future 20-metre-high foyer, created with composer and producer Tomas Kærup
- A folk song inspired by workers’ stories and archival material
Josefine Opsahl says:
"The title YEAST refers to the fermentation process that transforms raw ingredients into new substances. In the same way, the work acts as an artistic distillate, translating Kunsthal Spritten’s history into a contemporary, sensuous portrait of the place and its significance, both locally and globally."
YEAST will premiere at the opening of Kunsthal Spritten in 2027.
