Kunsthal Spritten x Kulturmødet Mors

Taking her point of departure in exchange as a practical and philosophical concept, Danish-Moroccan visual artist Maria Nørholm Ramouk (b. 1991) created the artwork If you have much, give of your wealth; if you have little, give of your heart for the Kulturmødet Mors festival 2024. Ramouk’s work takes the form of a tent whose nomadic qualities resonate with Kunsthallen Spritten’s temporary, unsettled conditions in the time ahead.

The tent will also be a setting for other exchanges in the form of artistic contributions and debates during the Kulturmødet festival. Together with Ramouk, Kunsthal Spritten curates a conversation featuring, among others, Moussa Mchangama, bringing new knowledge, perspectives and positions into a site-specific setting. Over the course of the festival, visitors can also enjoy an edible sculpture by artist Johanne Anastasia Stoffersen, performances by Resonerende Rum, where sound artist Lars Greve plays music with children newly arrived in Denmark from around the world, and a Slow Talk featuring musician Iris Gold and film director Patricia Bbaale Bandak.

Programme

Thursday 22 august

10.30–19.00: Vildnisset and the artwork are open

Come explore If you have much, give of your wealth; if you have little, give of your heart by Maria Nørholm Ramouk.

13.45–14.45: Indigenous Peoples of the Nordic Region: Aka Hansen, Ella Marie Hætta Isaksen and Liv Aira

Meet three powerful voices from Indigenous Nordic communities, discussing the current outlooks for Indigenous peoples in terms of opportunities, rights, culture and identity. The conversation will take its point of departure in their own stories and histories. How might future challenges be addressed through their perspectives and experience? Presented by Kulturmødet Mors, moderated by Moussa Mchangama.

17.00–18.00: Reception: ‘Open tent’ event with edible sculpture

Johanne Anastasia Stoffersen (b. 1994) uses the concept of the meal to exame our customs, food culture and social codes. On Thursday afternoon, Kunsthal Spritten invites all to attend an ‘open tent’ event in Vildnisset, where Stoffersen will serve an edible sculpture.

Friday 23 august

09.00–19.00: The artwork is open all day

Come explore If you have much, give of your wealth; if you have little, give of your heart by Maria Nørholm Ramouk.

10.00–11.00: Performances feat. Lars Greve & Sønderlandskolen’s Language Department

In two thirty-minute performances, composer and sound artist Lars Greve, acting as part of Resonerende Rum and led by Lis Raabjerg Kruse, joins children who have newly arrived in Denmark from around the world to make music together. Everyone is invited to listen in, or to take part in a sound experience that engages the body and awakens our sense of community.

13.30–15.00: Slow Talk with Maria Nørholm Ramouk & Moussa Mchangama

Unplug and give yourself time to see visual artist Maria Nørholm Ramouk (b. 1991) and author Moussa Mchangama (b. 1987) engage in a conversation about home, generosity and exchange, set inside the artwork If you have much, give of your wealth; If you have little, give of your heart. There is no stage, no moderator, and no pre-determined cut-off point. With this conversation, we want to slow the festival down and make room for nuance and calm reflection.

15.30–16.30: Slow Talk with Iris Gold & Patricia Bbaale Bandak

No means no! Taking their starting point in their own stories, singer Iris Gold and filmmaker Patricia Bbaale Bandak talk about violence: a subject that’s important, emotionally fraught, and, sadly, deeply relevant. We unbox shame and step into a conversation about the value and potential of art – for the individual and for society – when taboos need to be broken. Patricia Bbaale Bandak’s 2024 documentary Englemord/Death of a Saint centres on the murder of her mother, sparking a cinematic exploration of culture, inheritance and relationships. Iris Gold’s latest release, ‘Boys Boys Boys’, is an open letter to all of us, calling on us to speak out loudly about violence and abuse within the family.

Presented by Kunsthal Spritten in collaboration with PlanBørnefonden.

Saturday 24 august

09.00–17.00: The artwork is open all day

Bring a friend, neighbour, colleague, mum or brother, and explore the tent-shaped artwork in Vildnisset. Inside, you can settle into soft cushions surrounded by plant-dyed textiles.

10.00–11.00 and 12.00–13.00: Breathing techniques with Mads Bille Bloch

Breathe! Practice holding your breath and try out special breathing techniques that calm your body, guided by breathwork instructor Mads Bille Bloch. Presented in close collaboration with the festival Kulturmødet Mors.

14.00–15.00: Community singing with Niels W. Jacobsen

Today, our community singing event will take place in the tent in Vildnisset. We’ll sing songs from the Højskolesangbogen (Folk High School Songbook), and everyone is welcome to join in!

Partnership

Kunsthal Spritten and Kulturmødet Mors have entered into a three-year partnership with the aim of creating engaging audience experiences and encounters, all with contemporary art at the centre and all cutting across boundaries of age, background, gender and circumstances. Through this collaboration, the two cultural organisations support Region North Jutland’s efforts to ensure that more citizens benefit from attractive art offerings, and that art should contribute to a stronger regional response to society’s current challenges.

From 2024 to 2026, Kunsthal Spritten and Kulturmødet Mors are joining forces to present a new art programme each year, addressing current issues with contemporary art as a catalyst. In 2024, the theme is exchange. Taking this as her starting point, the Danish-Moroccan artist Maria Nørholm Ramouk will create the work If you have much, give of your wealth; if you have little, give of your heart for Kulturmødet 2024.
